Architecture - Adaptive Re-Use, Renovations, and New Additions
Columbia Market House
Columbia, Pennsylvania

Combining our knowledge of farmers' markets with our experience in the rehabilitation of historic buildings, we assisted the Borough of Columbia in exploring renovation options and potential new uses for its historic Market House. Our work included a public participation process, an implementation action plan, designs for building renovations and streetscape improvements, and construction budget projections for that work.

Stevens-Smith Interpretive Center & Historic Precinct
Lancaster, Pennsylvania

The Stevens-Smith Site involves a total of six historic buildings, including the house and law office of abolitionist Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, plus an entirely new structure: the Interpretive and Educational Center.  Our work involves documentation of existing conditions and the design and architectural engineering necessary to stabilize, partially demolish, reconstruct and restore portions of these six buildings, as well as an underground cistern. We are also designing a complete historic and contemporary interpretive environment, including museum spaces, cafés and restaurants, building exteriors and interiors as well as streetscape improvements.
Franklin Apartments
Ephrata, Pennsylvania

To provide independent living for senior citizens, we converted an 1885 cigar factory into a fully accessible mix of 41 market-rate and subsidized apartment units. After another firm’s design came in significantly over budget, we developed a more efficient design that reduced the construction cost by 20 percent. This project was developed by Housing Development Corporation and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.
New Life for Old City Hall
Bradford, Pennsylvania

One of the most visible buildings in downtown Bradford's National Register Historic District, Old City Hall stood largely vacant for nearly 50 years. After advising the City on re-acquiring the building, we were retained to plan and design the renovations. To match the work needed with the funds available, we recommended exterior and structural repairs and designed a future addition to include a lobby, elevator, exit stair, toilet rooms, and mechanical equipment. Construction is now underway on the building’s exterior.
Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster
Lancaster, Pennsylvania

To save an historic church from demolition and adapt it for a new congregation, we guided planning, design, and construction documentation for renovations and additions. Our design included a new courtyard entrance, renovated vestibule, an education wing, and provision for an elevator. To take advantage of the building’s location along a narrow alley, we secured zoning variances required to create the courtyard
